Care facilities and nursing homes must promote care for residents in a manner and in an environment that maintains or enhances each resident's dignity and respect in full recognition of his or her individuality. This includes the right to:

Privacy during treatment and personal care
Receive and make phone calls in private
Send and receive mail unopened
Associate privately with persons of resident's choice

Residents of nursing homes and care facilities often feel vulnerable, as they have given up their independent lives in order to reside at a care facility. They are often, for the first time in their adult lives, required to depend on strangers to meet their basic needs, and this feeling of dependence can be humbling.
